26 Marathons
I just finished the book 26 Marathons: What I Learned About Faith, Identity, Running, and Life from My Marathon Career by Meb Keflezighi.
This is an outstanding book by a great American!
Here are some lessons I learned from Meb that he learned running during his career:
- Maintain a running log and use it to learn from and improve
- Patience is a virtue - Hold tight on pace
- Consistency is critical
- It is better to be under trained than overtrained - It's better to be 90% trained and make it to the start line then to panic and either overtrain or undertrain
- The marathon is a metaphor for life in how it reads rewards patience
- When things don't go the way you want, they will still usually turn out okay
- Focus on what you can control; Don't be distracted by what you cannot (Serenity Prayer)
- Utilize progressive goals; For example:
- My top goal is to make the podium of the race
- If I cannot win, place in the top 10
- If not, finish the race
- Running to win isn't about winning or place, it is about doing the best you can
- Always finish hard - you can rest after - Continuing to fight until the end is never outside your control; That thought pattern makes you aim higher than you ever would
- Give yourself a chance to succeed - Without chasing opportunities, you miss out on possible success. Jump on opportunities.
